How to play it

• Fianchetto with g3 and Bg2 — the bishop plus c4-pawn clamp d5 forever.
• You're playing a Sicilian with an extra tempo: every Black Sicilian plan works for you, one move faster.
• Flexible transpositions are the point: slide into Catalan, QGD, or pure English structures based on Black's replies.

How opponents will fight back

• Mirror with 1…e5 (reversed Sicilian) and play the positions where the extra tempo matters least.
• 1…c5 keeps symmetry until White commits — patience neutralizes flexibility.
• Strike the fianchetto: …h5–h4 ideas against g3 setups are the modern antidote.
