How to Beat the Dutch Defense

What you're facing: Black stakes the kingside immediately — the Dutch fights for e4 and dreams of the same attack the KID delivers, one move sooner.

• 2. Bg5!? immediately exploits the weakened e8–h5 diagonal — the move Dutch players hate most.
• Fianchetto with g3: the Bg2 stares at the hole on e4 and the weakened light squares around Black's king.
• Open the center — every Dutch pawn on f5 weakens e6/e5; central files punish flank ambition.

What your opponent is trying to do

• Choose your Dutch: Stonewall (…d5, …e6, …c6) for an iron grip on e4, or Leningrad (…g6) for KID-style dynamism.
• In the Stonewall, the e4-square is your kingdom — plant a knight there and attack with …Qe8–h5.
• Your c8-bishop is the problem child: reroute via …b6/…Bb7 or …Bd7–e8–h5.
