Caro-Kann Defense

The French's sturdier cousin: Black supports …d5 with the c-pawn, keeping the light-squared bishop free — solid enough for world championship matches.

The moves

How to play it

• Play 1…c6 and 2…d5, and unlike the French, develop the bishop OUTSIDE the pawn chain to f5 or g4 before playing …e6.
• Your structure is nearly indestructible — trade pieces calmly and grind superior endgames.
• Standard plan: …Nd7, …Ngf6, …e6, …Be7, castle, then break with …c5 at the right moment.

How opponents will fight back

• The Advance (3. e5 Bf5 4. Nc3 e6 5. g4!?) chases the bishop and grabs kingside space before Black settles.
• The Exchange with c4 (Panov Attack) turns the quiet Caro into an open, IQP battle Black may not want.
• Karpov-proof but slow: use your free tempi to seize space — the Caro rarely punishes ambition quickly.
