How to play it

• As Black, trade your c-pawn for White's d-pawn to own the half-open c-file and a central pawn majority.
• Standard setup: …d6, …Nf6, …a6, expand with …b5, and pile rooks on the c-file toward White's queenside.
• Counterattack is the whole point — meet a kingside pawn storm with your own queenside avalanche.

How opponents will fight back

• Play the Open Sicilian (2. Nf3 and 3. d4) and attack with the English Attack: Be3, f3, Qd2, g4, and castle long.
• Anti-Sicilians like the Alapin (2. c3) or Grand Prix (2. Nc3 and f4) drag Black out of preparation.
• Race matters: in opposite-side castling, count tempi — every quiet move Black makes is a free move for your attack.
