• Return the pawn calmly with 4. Bf4 or 4. Nf3 — holding e5 with 4. f4?! is exactly the greed Black baits.
• Play e3, Be2, Nc3, and castle — Black's activity fades and c4+d-file pressure remains.
• Watch f2 and e3: nearly every Budapest trap detonates on those two squares.

What your opponent is trying to do

• After 3. dxe5 Ng4, harass with …Bc5, …Nc6, and …Ngxe5 regains the pawn with a free, easy game.
• Your pieces come out with threats: …Bb4+, …Qe7, …0-0-0 lines give real attacking chances.
