How to play it
- After 3. dxe5 Ng4, harass with …Bc5, …Nc6, and …Ngxe5 regains the pawn with a free, easy game.
- Your pieces come out with threats: …Bb4+, …Qe7, …0-0-0 lines give real attacking chances.
- The gambit's honest value: equal chances plus an opponent thinking alone from move two.
How opponents will fight back
- Return the pawn calmly with 4. Bf4 or 4. Nf3 — holding e5 with 4. f4?! is exactly the greed Black baits.
- Play e3, Be2, Nc3, and castle — Black's activity fades and c4+d-file pressure remains.
- Watch f2 and e3: nearly every Budapest trap detonates on those two squares.
⚠ Trap to know: The legendary smothered idea: 4. Bf4 Nc6 5. Nf3 Bb4+ 6. Nbd2 Qe7 7. a3 Ngxe5! 8. axb4?? Nd3# — mate on move eight.
