Scholar's Mate (and Stopping It)
The four-move checkmate every beginner meets: Qh5 and Bc4 gang up on f7. Easy to attempt, trivial to refute — and refuting it wins the game.

How to play it
- The 'attack' is Qh5 hitting e5 and f7, then Bc4 doubling on f7 for Qxf7#.
- It only works if Black plays careless developing moves — one accurate defense and the queen becomes a target.
- Beginners: use it to understand WHY f7 is weak, then retire it — every practiced player punishes it.
How opponents will fight back
- 2…Nc6 defends e5, then 3…g6! hits the queen — after Qf3, play …Nf6 and Black is fully developed while the queen wanders.
- Do NOT play 2…g6?? immediately — 3. Qxe5+ forks king and rook. Defend e5 first, then chase.
- After the queen retreats, Black leads development by two moves — convert it: castle fast, open the center, attack.
⚠ Trap to know: The whole opening IS the trap — and it's a trap for its user: by move 6, Black is often winning by force with simple developing moves.
