Black invites White to build a big center, then attacks it with pieces — a hypermodern counterpuncher's dream.

The moves

How to play it

• Fianchetto, castle, then choose your break: …e5 or …c5 — the g7-bishop makes both bite.
• Flexibility is the weapon: delay commitment, watch White's setup, strike where the center is least defended.
• Typical regrouping: …Nbd7, …e5, …Re8, …exd4 and pieces flood the e-file.

How opponents will fight back

• The Austrian Attack (4. f4!) takes maximum space and asks the Pirc to prove it before Black castles.
• 150 Attack: Be3, Qd2, Bh6 trades the g7-bishop, then h4–h5 pries the king open.
• Don't over-extend: the entire Pirc strategy is baiting one pawn move too many.
