Crazyhouse

Captured pieces switch sides and can be dropped back on the board.

The rules

Every piece you capture joins your reserve. Instead of moving, you may drop a reserve piece on any empty square. Pawns cannot drop on the first or eighth rank. A dropped pawn cannot deliver mate in some implementations; in ours it can. Promoted pieces return to the reserve as pawns.

Why it is worth playing

Crazyhouse is the closest chess gets to a fighting game. Material barely matters — a piece you capture is a piece your opponent gets to drop next to your king. What matters is the safety of the squares around your king, and there are never enough of them.

Four plans that win games

Count the holes around your king, not the pieces

The single skill that separates good Crazyhouse from bad. Every square adjacent to your king that no pawn defends is a place a knight can land with check. Before every move, count them.

A knight in hand is worth more than a rook

Dropped knights fork. Dropped rooks need open lines that usually do not exist yet. If you are choosing what to capture, take knights.

Sacrifice to open a square, not to win material

Giving a rook for a pawn is normal here if it clears g7 or h7. Material comes back — squares do not.

Do not fianchetto

The hole on the long diagonal is permanent and a dropped piece will find it. Keep your king's pawns where they started for as long as you can.

Mistakes that lose games

Never capture just because you can

Every capture arms your opponent. If a trade gives them a knight in hand and you a pawn, you have lost the exchange that matters.

Watch for back-rank drops

A rook dropped on your back rank is mate far more often than in standard chess, because your escape squares are usually already occupied.

Do not open your king to grab a pawn

In standard chess a pawn is a pawn. Here, an open king is a loss.

What it teaches you about standard chess

King safety, permanently

Crazyhouse punishes a loose king within two moves rather than twenty, so the habit of counting the defended squares around your own king becomes automatic. Players who spend a month on Crazyhouse come back to standard chess and notice weak back ranks and open diagonals they used to walk past.

That is the argument for variants generally, and it is worth stating plainly: a variant removes part of chess so that what remains gets your full attention. Played casually they are a pleasant break. Played deliberately — naming the skill first, then going back to a standard game and finding the same idea — they are the most efficient training available, because you are practising one thing at a time instead of everything at once.

Who it suits

Anyone who finds standard chess too slow, and anyone learning tactics — Crazyhouse forces pattern recognition faster than any other variant.

You can play it right now on any device, in a browser, against a full engine — no download and no account. If you have never tried a variant before, give it three games rather than one: the first is spent learning the rules, and the second is where it starts being chess.
