Three-Check Chess

Check your opponent three times and you win — checkmate optional.

The rules

Standard chess with an extra win condition: give check three times and you win immediately, regardless of the position. Checkmate still ends the game as normal.

Why it is worth playing

Three-Check rewards a completely different kind of aggression. A check that achieves nothing positionally is worth a third of a game, so moves that a normal chess player would dismiss as pointless become the strongest on the board.

Four plans that win games

Value checking pieces enormously

Knights and queens check from squares bishops cannot reach. A knight that can reach a checking square is worth more than a rook that cannot.

Give the king an escape square early

…h6 or …g6 style moves that look slow are essential here. Every diagonal or file pointing at your king is a third of a loss.

Spend material for checks without hesitation

A piece for two checks is often a winning trade. Count the score, not the material.

Play the third check only when it wins

Sometimes holding a check in reserve is stronger — your opponent must play the whole game avoiding a position where it becomes available.

Mistakes that lose games

Do not castle into a checking net

The g- and h-files and the a2–g8 diagonal all point at a castled king. In this variant that is three checks waiting to happen.

A discovered check counts

And it lets the moving piece go anywhere. This is the single most dangerous pattern in the variant.

Do not ignore the score

Track it. Players lose Three-Check by playing a normal good move on move 30 when they were already at two checks.

What it teaches you about standard chess

Seeing every check on the board

Most tactical oversights below 1600 are missed checks, either yours or theirs. Three-Check makes checks the currency of the game, and after a few dozen games you simply see them all, in every game you play.

That is the argument for variants generally, and it is worth stating plainly: a variant removes part of chess so that what remains gets your full attention. Played casually they are a pleasant break. Played deliberately — naming the skill first, then going back to a standard game and finding the same idea — they are the most efficient training available, because you are practising one thing at a time instead of everything at once.

Who it suits

Attacking players, and anyone who wants to get better at spotting checks — a skill that transfers directly back to standard chess.

You can play it right now on any device, in a browser, against a full engine — no download and no account. If you have never tried a variant before, give it three games rather than one: the first is spent learning the rules, and the second is where it starts being chess.
