The romantic era's crown jewel: White offers the f-pawn to rip open the f-file and attack before Black finishes breakfast.

The moves

How to play it

• After 2…exf4 3. Nf3, plans include Bc4 targeting f7, d4 for the full center, and castling into the half-open f-file.
• Your rook on f1 is pre-attacking — every tactic in the position flows through f7.
• Play it with commitment: material means nothing, tempo means everything.

How opponents will fight back

• Decline it with 2…Bc5! — the bishop eyes g1 and forbids castling; White's f4 becomes a weakness, not a weapon.
• Accept and return the pawn later with …d5 — activity, not greed, is the modern refutation.
• The Falkbeer (2…d5!?) counter-gambits immediately: open lines cut both ways.
