How Chess Tournament Pairings Are Decided

Halfway through every scholastic tournament a parent asks the same question: who decides these pairings, and why does my child keep getting Black? The short answer is a set of published rules called the Swiss system, applied by a computer. This guide walks through what the software is actually doing, so the pairing sheet stops looking random.

It's a Swiss, not a knockout

Almost every scholastic and club tournament runs on the Swiss system. Nobody gets eliminated. Lose the first three games and your child still plays rounds four and five — against other players who have also lost, which is exactly where the closest, most winnable games live.

The format exists to sort a big field in few rounds. Five rounds can put 100 players into a sensible order because the pairings tighten as you go: winners meet winners, and by the last round the players on perfect scores fight it out on the top boards.

Two inputs drive every pairing: current score and rating. Everything else — colours, avoiding repeats, byes — is a correction applied on top of those two.

Score groups: winners play winners

Before each round the field splits into score groups. Everyone on 2/2 goes in one group, everyone on 1.5 in the next, down to the players on zero. Pairings are made inside each group wherever possible.

This is why a child who wins early faces harder opponents, and a child who loses early gets easier ones. It isn't a punishment or a favour — it's the whole design. A player on 3-0 has earned a 3-0 opponent.

When a group has an odd number of players, one player floats down to meet the top of the group below. Floating down usually means a slightly easier game; floating up means a harder one. The rules try to spread floats around so the same child isn't bounced between groups every round.

Inside the group: top half plays bottom half

Within a score group, players are ranked by rating and the top half plays the bottom half. In a group of eight, the highest-rated plays the fifth-rated, second plays sixth, and so on.

This surprises parents who expect seed 1 to play seed 2. That game is saved for the end. Early rounds are deliberately lopsided so the strongest players are kept apart and only meet once both have kept winning.

The practical consequence: in round one your child will usually face someone rated a few hundred points above or below them. A big rating gap in an early round is normal, not a clerical error. It also means round one is often the hardest game a lower-rated child gets all day — the field gets fairer from round two onwards.

Colours: whose turn is it to be White

White moves first, which is a small but real edge, so colours are managed too. Two rules dominate: each player should finish with as near an equal number of Whites and Blacks as possible, and nobody should get the same colour three times in a row if it can be helped. Both US Chess and FIDE write these into their pairing regulations.

Colour is also the first thing the computer sacrifices when the numbers don't work. If five players in a group are due White and only three are due Black, somebody gets the wrong colour. That's why a child can catch Black twice running — the software judged keeping the score group intact more important than the colour.

Over a five-round event, expect a 3-2 split one way or the other. A 4-1 split is rare but legal when every alternative pairing was worse.

Why you never play the same opponent twice

The firmest rule in a Swiss: no player meets the same opponent twice in one event. Once your child has played someone, that pairing is dead for the rest of the tournament, and the software will bend colours and even score groups to avoid it.

Siblings and teammates get related treatment. Most scholastic events set the software to avoid pairing players from the same school or family where it can — partly for team scoring, partly because a rematch of two kids who train together every week tells the organiser very little.

But that protection is not absolute. If the only two unbeaten players going into the last round are teammates, or brothers, they play each other. US Chess guidance for national scholastic events explicitly allows teammates on high scores to be paired in the final rounds when no other fair pairing exists. The alternative — dropping one of them onto a weaker opponent — would decide the trophies by lottery instead of over the board.

Byes, odd numbers and late arrivals

An odd number of players means someone sits out each round. That's a full-point bye: the lowest-ranked player in the bottom score group who hasn't already had one gets a free point and a round off. Standard practice is that no player receives two full-point byes in the same event.

Requested byes are different. Most events let you ask in advance to skip a round — for a family commitment, say — usually for half a point, and usually only if you ask before round one or by a posted deadline. The tournament flyer will say.

Late entries typically take a half-point or zero-point bye for the missed round and join from round two. If you know you'll be late, tell the organiser before the day. Turning up after pairings are posted can mean losing the first game on time.

None of these is a malfunction. They're the visible edges of rules working as written.

If you think a pairing really is wrong

Genuine mistakes do happen: a result entered backwards, a name missing, two players somehow paired twice. Check the wall chart first — most wrong pairings trace back to a previous result recorded incorrectly, and that's a two-minute fix.

Then have the player, not the parent, raise it with the tournament director before the round starts. TDs correct real errors gladly. Once clocks are running, an imperfect pairing generally stands, because restarting boards punishes forty other children for one clerical slip.

The best protection is a habit: after every game, your child checks that the posted result matches what happened on the board, and glances at their colour history. Players who verify their own results almost never end up in pairing disputes. It's also a quietly useful life skill — read the sheet, check your line, speak up early and politely.

Common questions

Can my child be paired against a sibling or teammate?

Usually not — most scholastic events tell the pairing software to avoid same-family and same-school pairings where possible. The protection isn't absolute, though. If the two of them are the only players on the top score late in the event, they will be paired, because giving either one an easier opponent would be unfair to the rest of the field.

Why does my child keep getting Black?

The software balances colours across the whole event, but score-group pairings and the no-repeat rule take priority, so a run of two Blacks can happen. The colour history is tracked, and the imbalance is normally repaid within a round or two. Over five rounds expect a 3-2 split rather than a perfect alternation.

My child got a bye — did they do something wrong?

No. With an odd number of players someone must sit out each round, and the full-point bye goes to the lowest-ranked player in the bottom score group who hasn't had one yet. It's a free point, it counts toward prizes, and no player should receive two full-point byes in the same event.

Can I ask the tournament director to change a pairing?

You can query it, and if there's a genuine error — a wrong result or a repeat pairing — the TD will fix it before the round begins. Have your child raise it themselves at the director's table. Once games are underway, pairings almost always stand, so check the sheet the moment it's posted.

Where to go from here

Everything above is the practical layer — the part that decides whether a club survives, whether a child keeps playing, and whether a coaching business pays. It is also the part almost nobody writes about, because it is less interesting than opening theory and far more useful.

If you are teaching, the two things that move the needle fastest are structure and measurement: a session that has the same shape every week, and a number each student can watch go up. Neither requires you to be a strong player. Both require you to be organised, and organisation is the thing you can actually control.
