Endgame Arena

Start straight in an endgame — no opening, no middlegame.

The rules

The game begins from a reduced position with kings, pawns and a small number of pieces. Standard rules throughout.

Why it is worth playing

Most players study openings and lose in endgames. Endgame Arena removes the first forty moves so you spend your whole session on the phase that actually decides games. It is the highest-return training format in chess.

Four plans that win games

Activate the king immediately

The single most common endgame error is leaving the king at home. Here you get to practise fixing that from move one.

Rooks behind passed pawns

Yours and theirs. It is the most reliable rule in rook endgames and this is where you drill it.

Create a passed pawn, then escort it

Every endgame plan reduces to this. Which majority, which file, which escort.

Count everything

Endgames are calculation, not judgement. The rule of the square, the opposition, the tempo count — they are arithmetic and arithmetic can be practised.

Mistakes that lose games

Do not trade into a worse pawn structure

Piece trades in an endgame are structural decisions, not simplifications.

Do not push passed pawns too early

A pawn on the sixth with no escort is a pawn about to be lost.

Do not forget stalemate

In a winning endgame it is the only way to lose half a point.

What it teaches you about standard chess

The phase that decides games

Most players spend their study time on openings and lose in endgames. This format inverts that. King activity, rook placement and passed-pawn technique get drilled every single game instead of once a fortnight.

That is the argument for variants generally, and it is worth stating plainly: a variant removes part of chess so that what remains gets your full attention. Played casually they are a pleasant break. Played deliberately — naming the skill first, then going back to a standard game and finding the same idea — they are the most efficient training available, because you are practising one thing at a time instead of everything at once.
