Chess Variants by Yourself or With a Coach?
Chess variants are the easiest part of chess to learn alone: the rules take minutes, the board explains them as they apply, and every one of the 20 has a guide in the Library. A coach is not needed to play them. A coach is needed to choose them, because the right variant drills the habit you cannot see, and that is the one you cannot pick yourself.

What can you learn alone?
Everything about how a variant works. The rules, from the variants hub and from the board itself, which explains a drop or a forced capture the first time it happens. The plans, from the guide for each variant. The feel, from three games against the engine at a level where the result is in doubt. A player who does that for a variant knows it as well as any coach could teach it, at no cost and in an evening.
What does the guide give you?
What a coach would say about the variant in general: the rules in one paragraph, four plans that win, the mistakes that lose, who it suits and what it teaches about standard chess. Every variant has one. Most players never read it and play plan-less games for a month. Reading it before the second game is the single biggest shortcut available, and it is free.
What can only a coach see?
Which variant you need. A player who thinks they are weak in the endgame may actually be losing from the middlegame decisions that lead there, and Endgame Arena will drill the wrong thing. The habit that costs the most is the one you cannot see, so the variant that drills it is the one you would not choose. A coach watching you play a standard game on a shared board names the habit, then names the variant.
When does an hour pay off?
When you have played variants for a month and the standard game has not changed. That means the drill was aimed at the wrong skill, and another month of guessing costs more than a session. A session of private coaching here is $60 for a live one-to-one game on a shared board, and the coach can set that board to any variant, so the hour can be spent both finding the habit and watching you drill it.
How do coaches use variants with students?
As homework with a purpose. A coach on a trainer plan sees a student rush a winning endgame in a class game, assigns ten Endgame Arena positions, and sees whether they were played before the next session. A room that never attacks gets a week of Three-Check. A child who depends on a memorised opening gets Chess960 until the principles do the work. The variant is the exercise; the coach is the one who set it.
How do you coach yourself?
Keep a list of how you lose standard games, in plain words: rushed when ahead, never attacked, lost the thread once the book moves ran out. Match each line to a variant using the chooser on the variants hub and the guides. Play three games of that variant, then a standard game with the habit in mind. When the list stops changing and the standard game stops improving, that list is what a coach needs, and it makes the hour worth several.
What about children?
A child does not need a coach to enjoy Horde and will play it forty times unprompted. A child does need someone to notice that the forty games taught pawn play and that the next drill should be something else. That someone can be a parent with the guide open, or a coach with a dashboard showing what was played. Either way the variants are free and the noticing is the work.
The honest split
Alone for the playing, which is all of the volume and most of the learning. A coach occasionally for the choosing, when a month of self-chosen variants has not moved the standard game. A player who books a coach to learn the rules of Crazyhouse is paying for what the board teaches free. A player who never books one after guessing wrong for a season is drilling the wrong skill at no cost and no benefit.
What to bring if you book
Three standard games you lost in ways you cannot explain, and the list of variants you have been playing. The first tells the coach the habit; the second tells them what you thought it was. The gap between the two is the session, and it usually ends with a different variant on the homework list than the one you had been playing.
Common questions
Do I need a coach to learn chess variants?
No. The rules take minutes, the board explains them as they apply and every variant has a guide. A coach is for choosing which variant drills the habit you cannot see.
How does a coach use chess variants?
As targeted homework: a variant assigned for the specific weakness shown in a standard game, with the trainer dashboard showing whether it was played.
When should I book a coach for variant practice?
When a month of self-chosen variants has not changed your standard game. That means the drill was aimed at the wrong skill.
Can a coaching session be played in a variant?
Yes. A private session here is a live game on a shared board, and the board can be set to any of the 20 variants.

Where to go from here
Everything above is the practical layer, the part that decides whether a club survives, whether a child keeps playing, and whether a coaching business pays. It is also the part almost nobody writes about, because it is less interesting than opening theory and far more useful.
If you are teaching, the two things that move the needle fastest are structure and measurement: a session that has the same shape every week, and a number each student can watch go up. Neither requires you to be a strong player. Both require you to be organised, and organisation is the thing you can actually control.
The rest of this Library covers the chess itself: twenty-one openings written from both sides, seven complete guides to tactics, endgames, checkmate patterns and strategy, and twenty variants with a guide each. All of it is free, and all of it is playable on a live board, which matters more than reading it.
