How Do Chess Tournament Tiebreaks Work?

Two children finish a five-round tournament on the same score. One takes the trophy home and the other doesn't, and nobody at the table can explain why. That gap is filled by tiebreaks, and they are far less mysterious than the crosstable makes them look.

Why tiebreaks exist at all

Most scholastic events run as a Swiss system: everyone plays every round, winners are paired against winners, and after four or five rounds several players usually share the top score. There's one first-place trophy and no time for a playoff, so the organiser needs a way to order tied players that's decided before the event starts, applies the same maths to everyone, and can be computed from the results sheet in seconds.

That's all a tiebreak is. It's not a judgement about who played better chess. It's a published tie-splitting rule, the same way goal difference splits tied football teams. The event flyer or the pairing software settings will name the systems used and their order, and a well-run event fixes that order before round one.

The core idea: who did you have to beat?

Almost every common tiebreak asks one question: how strong was your opposition? Two players on 4/5 have the same score, but if one of them scored those points against opponents who kept winning all weekend, while the other beat players who faded, the first player had the harder path. The tiebreak systems below are just different ways of measuring that path using the only clean data available: your opponents' final scores.

Notice what this means for a nervous parent: your child's tiebreaks depend on how other people's games go after your child has finished. That's the part that feels strange, and we'll come back to it.

Buchholz and Solkoff: add up your opponents' scores

The simplest opposition-strength measure has two names. FIDE events call it Buchholz; US Chess events call the same sum Solkoff. Take every opponent your child played, add up their final scores, and that total is the tiebreak. Bigger is better, because a bigger total means the people your child sat across from kept scoring points against everyone else.

In a five-round event, if your child's opponents finished on 4, 3, 3, 2 and 1, the Buchholz is 13. A rival on the same match score whose opponents finished 3, 3, 2, 2 and 1 has 11 and places below. FIDE's recommended variant, Buchholz Cut-1, drops the single weakest opponent from the sum first, so one first-round pairing against a struggling player can't drag the number down.

Median and Modified Median: drop the extremes

A raw sum can be skewed by one very strong or very weak opponent, so the median family trims before adding. The classic Median (sometimes called Harkness) discards each player's highest-scoring and lowest-scoring opponent and sums the rest.

Modified Median, usually the first tiebreak at US Chess events, trims according to how the player did:

The logic is that a player who scored well shouldn't be punished for one easy early pairing, and a player who scored poorly shouldn't be rescued by one lucky pairing against the eventual winner. It sounds fiddly, but the software applies it identically to everyone.

Cumulative: rewarding the early lead

Cumulative ignores opponents entirely. Write down your child's running score after each round, then add those numbers up. Win the first four rounds and lose the last: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 4 = 14. Lose the first and win the next four: 0 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10. Same final score, very different cumulative.

Why reward early wins? In a Swiss, a player who starts strong gets paired against the other leaders and earns later points the hard way, while a player who starts slow climbs through the lower boards. Cumulative is a cheap proxy for that, and it's popular as a second or third tiebreak because it needs no opponent data at all. Its cousin, Cumulative of Opposition, adds up the cumulative scores of everyone your child played, and typically sits last in the chain.

A worked example

Five rounds. Aisha and Ben both finish on 4/5. Aisha's opponents ended the event on 4.5, 4, 3, 2.5 and 1. Ben's ended on 4, 3, 3, 2 and 1.5.

Whoever wins depends entirely on which system the organiser listed first. At a typical US Chess scholastic that's Modified Median, so Aisha takes the trophy. At an event using cumulative first, Ben would. Neither answer is wrong; they're answers to different questions, both fixed in advance.

Why it feels unfair

Three things make tiebreaks feel like a fix even when they aren't.

What makes them fair anyway: the rule is published before the event, it uses no human judgement, and every player is measured with the same arithmetic. The alternative, an official eyeballing two score sheets and picking a winner, is worse in every way that matters.

What to tell your child at the trophy table

Keep it short and concrete. The score is what they earned over the board and nobody can take it away; the tiebreak only decides who carries the bigger trophy when the scores are level. Say something like: you and the other player both scored 4, and the rule for splitting that was set before round one; this time it went their way.

Then do the useful things:

Special cases worth knowing

A few wrinkles come up often enough to flag. Byes and forfeits are handled by special rules (an unplayed game usually counts as a notional opponent score rather than a real one), which is why hand-calculating from the wall chart sometimes disagrees with the software; trust the software. Top professional events increasingly settle first place with rapid or blitz playoff games instead of maths, but that needs time and boards a 200-child scholastic doesn't have. Round-robin events lean on Sonneborn-Berger, which weights wins against high scorers more heavily, though you'll rarely meet it at a weekend Swiss.

None of this needs memorising. Know that the order is published, that Buchholz-style systems measure opposition strength, that cumulative rewards front-runners, and you'll be the calmest parent in the hall. If you track your child's events in Grandmaster Gains, the results log makes it easy to look back and see whether close finishes keep coming down to tiebreaks, which is itself a sign they're being paired up against the strongest field.

Common questions

Why didn't head-to-head decide it when my child beat the other tied player?

Some events do use head-to-head, but many can't apply it cleanly. In a Swiss, three or more players often tie and they haven't all played each other, so there's no complete head-to-head comparison. Organisers therefore lead with systems like Modified Median or Buchholz that work for any number of tied players. Check the event's published tiebreak order to see where, if anywhere, direct encounter sits.

Do tiebreaks affect my child's chess rating?

No. Ratings are calculated from individual game results against each opponent's rating, and tiebreaks never enter that calculation. Tiebreaks only decide trophy and prize order among players who finished on the same match score. A child who loses a trophy on tiebreak gets exactly the same rating change as if they'd won it.

Can I calculate the tiebreaks myself from the wall chart?

Mostly, yes: add up each opponent's final score for Solkoff, apply the drops for median systems, and sum the running totals for cumulative. Byes, forfeits and unplayed games follow special counting rules though, so your hand total can differ from the official one. If a placement looks wrong, ask the arbiter to show the calculation rather than assuming an error.

Which tiebreak system is the fairest?

There's no consensus, which is why events chain several. FIDE recommends Buchholz Cut-1, which drops the weakest opponent, while US Chess events typically lead with Modified Median then Solkoff then Cumulative. Each answers a slightly different question about whose path was harder. What matters most is that the order is fixed and published before round one.

Where to go from here

Everything above is the practical layer — the part that decides whether a club survives, whether a child keeps playing, and whether a coaching business pays. It is also the part almost nobody writes about, because it is less interesting than opening theory and far more useful.

If you are teaching, the two things that move the needle fastest are structure and measurement: a session that has the same shape every week, and a number each student can watch go up. Neither requires you to be a strong player. Both require you to be organised, and organisation is the thing you can actually control.
